The Concrete Theatre

Construction sites. Diptych format. Workers in stillness. Ongoing since 2020.

Cities shed their skins rapidly, masking the raw, brutal truth of construction behind polished facades. “The Concrete Theatre” is an exploration of this liminal space — a transitional geography where unfinished architecture, exposed rebar and industrial plastic form unintentional, monumental installations.

At the center of these silent, chaotic stages stand the workers. In this series they are not captured in the act of labor, but rather in moments of absolute stillness. Employing a deadpan aesthetic and a diptych format, the project strips away the conventional “documentary” narrative of the working class. The wide shots establish the overwhelming scale of the environments, while the closer portraits force a direct, unflinching psychological confrontation with the subjects.

Here, the boundary between candid reality and staged tableau dissolves. The workers, adorned in the weathered, heavily textured garments of their trade — functioning almost as a form of industrial anti-fashion — become the involuntary actors in a theatre they are building with their own hands. “The Concrete Theatre” is a testament to human presence within spaces designed for living, highlighting the paradox that the creators of these monuments are merely their invisible, temporary inhabitants.
