Borrowed Sanctuaries

Hengam Island.

Borrowed Sanctuaries is a visual exploration of an unanchored existence on the isolated shores of Hengam Island. It documents a transient community of drifters, hikers and seekers who, for an indefinite period, mold the untamed nature and abandoned, cold structures into temporary utopias. The series captures the metamorphosis of a reclaimed military bunker, the tangled branches of a tree, and barren lands into places called ‘home.’

The visual approach relies on a deliberate juxtaposition. On one hand, the deadpan, sharp environmental portraits confront the viewer with the palpable, enduring reality of these individuals and the tools they use to tame their surroundings. On the other, the conceptual use of long exposure in wide and nocturnal shots serves as a core metaphor for transience — human figures blur into fleeting ghosts and light becomes a passing trace, emphasizing the ephemeral footprint of this lifestyle against the vastness of nature.

These individuals build homes without roots. From a minimal, delicately lit tent to the primal, communal warmth of a night fire, these spaces are not permanent settlements. They are psychological and physical sanctuaries borrowed from nature and time — existing only as long as the fire burns, destined to eventually fade away, just like the blurred figures in the frames, leaving the landscape to its original silence.
